Questions about the statistics

Can I use these statistics in an article?

Yes. They're published under CC BY 4.0, so you can quote, chart and republish them, including commercially, as long as you credit outdoorsauna.uk. A link is appreciated but the credit is what the licence asks for.

Where do the figures come from?

From our own dataset. We record the price and specifications of every garden sauna we can find for sale from UK retailers, from each retailer's own product page, and note the date we checked it. Nothing is estimated: where a retailer doesn't state a figure, we leave it blank. The detail is in the methodology.

Why do you use the median, not the average?

A handful of very large log cabins with a sauna room cost several times the typical price, and they pull a simple average up. The median is the middle listing, so it's a better guide to what a typical garden sauna costs.

How often are they updated?

Prices are re-checked against the retailers' pages, and each row in our tables shows its own checked date. The statistics on this page are recalculated every time the data changes, and the changelog records what moved.

Are these the prices people actually pay?

They're listed prices, including VAT, on the date we checked. They don't include delivery surcharges, assembly, a base or the electrical work, and most listings don't include a heater. Our cost calculator adds those up.
