42 sauna buckets, ladles and sets from £10, with the material and capacity each listing states, and what heater makers say about water on the stones.
A sauna bucket holds the water and the ladle puts it on the stones, a little at a time, to make steam. We recorded 42 buckets, ladles and sets at five UK retailers, from £9.99 to £401, checked on 3 October 2026. They’re listed below with the material and capacity each listing states, followed by what the heater makers say about how much water to use and what kind.

Prices and specifications as shown on each retailer's own website on 3 October 2026; the retailer's checkout price is what counts. Aqualine Saunas and Leisurequip do not say whether their prices include VAT; for the other retailers we recorded the displayed price and didn't check for a VAT statement. “From” marks a starting price where the retailer sells several sizes or options: the shop's own “from” price, or the cheapest size we noted for the item named. The listings for 11 of these items didn't show whether they were in stock. “Not recorded” means we don't hold the figure, usually because the listing didn't state it. We haven't tested these products. We may earn a commission if you buy through some of these links.
| Type | Listed | From | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bucket | 14 | £25.99 | £54.50 |

| Accessory set (bucket, ladle, thermometer, hygrometer, sand timer) | 1 | £134.79 | £135 |
| Accessory set | 1 | £401 | £401 |
“From” is the cheapest listing not marked out of stock. The median is the middle price of all the listings of that type.
These are not the shops’ whole ranges. Finnmark’s buckets and ladles collection listed 111 products; we read the first 40 and skipped colour duplicates and bundles that include scents.
Sauna bucket and ladle sets
15 of the listings are sold as sets or kits, from £55. Most pair a bucket with a ladle, and several add a thermometer, hygrometer or sand timer: the listing says which. We didn’t check what the Tylö Brilliant set contains.

The listings for 5 of these items didn't show whether they were in stock.
A set isn’t always cheaper than the parts. The cheapest bucket and the cheapest ladle we list come to £35.98 together. For gauges and timers on their own, see sauna thermometers.
Sauna buckets: size and material
Size. 10 of the 14 buckets state a capacity, from 4 to 16 litres. 9 of them hold 4 or 5 litres.
Material. Five of the 14 buckets are wood or bamboo, all with a plastic liner or insert, and eight are aluminium, steel or copper, some with a wooden or bamboo handle. For the other one we didn’t record a material.
After use. Harvia’s maintenance article says to remove the bench covers and the water bucket after bathing and to dry off any water droplets.

Sauna ladles
13 ladles are listed, from £9.99 to £74, in wood, bamboo, aluminium and stainless steel. Eight of them state a length, from 36 cm to about 50 cm.
Harvia’s manual for its Cilindro Pro heater says the ladle should hold at most 0.2 litres, because if too much water is poured on the stones only part of it evaporates and the rest may splash as boiling water. We didn’t record how much any of these ladles holds, so ask the retailer if it matters to you.

How much water to put on sauna stones
A little at a time, once the stones are hot. What each manual says:
| Maker and manual | How much at a time |
|---|---|
| Harvia (Cilindro Pro electric) | A ladle holding at most 0.2 litres |
| Narvi (Velvet electric) | 1 to 2 dl, which is 0.1 to 0.2 litres |
| HUUM (DROP electric) | About 80 ml |
| Tylö (US Sense Sport guide) | One dipper, about half a US cup |
HUUM’s DROP manual adds that you should start ladling only when the stones are fully heated and the water evaporates completely.

Checked between 1 and 3 October 2026.
What water to use
- Clean household water. Harvia’s Cilindro Pro manual says the water thrown on the stones should be of clean household-water quality, and Narvi’s Velvet manual says to use only clean household water. HUUM’s DROP manual says clean and warm water.
- Not sea, salt or pool water. Narvi’s Velvet manual says sea water, salt water and chlorinated water are not suitable and may damage the heater. Tylö’s US guide says not to pour chlorinated pool or spa water on the heater, and HUUM’s HIVE Wood manual says not to splash salt water onto the stove.
- Hard water. HUUM’s HIVE Wood manual says it is not advisable to throw hard water or water high in iron onto the stove, and Narvi’s NC manual gives limits for humus, iron, calcium and manganese.
- The warranty. Narvi’s NC manual says the heater warranty does not cover damage caused by unsuitable steam water.
- Scents. Harvia’s Cilindro Pro manual says only aromas made for sauna water may be added, and HUUM’s DROP manual says to use sauna fragrances and oils only in the steam water. We compare 33 sauna scents, with the dose where the listing gives one, and set out the makers’ warnings on how to use essential oils in a sauna.

Sauna shower buckets
We didn’t record a sauna shower bucket, the kind hung up and tipped for a cold rinse, in the listings we read at these retailers, which were not their whole ranges. If you want cold water next to the sauna, we compare ice baths and cold plunge tubs.
Infrared saunas don’t need one
A cabin heated by infrared panels alone has no stone heater, so there’s nothing to pour water on: see outdoor infrared saunas, where the hybrid models with a stone stove are listed with a bucket and ladle. The bucket and ladle go with an electric heater or a wood-burning stove filled with sauna stones.

Of the sauna buckets we list that state a capacity, most hold 4 or 5 litres; the range is 4 to 16 litres.
Can you use any water in a sauna?
