Small garden saunas: every model under 4 m²

Short of space? These are the 86 garden saunas in our dataset with an external footprint of 4 m² or less, about the size of a small garden shed. Every one is listed with its exact size and height, so you can check it against both your space and the planning rules, and every price was checked on 30 September 2026. Sauna tents are left out because they pack away; see sauna tents for those.

Shortlist: four small saunas worth a look

Each pick is the top model on the rule under it, among models whose retailer publishes the seats, size, height and heater. A model already picked is skipped. Prices checked 30 Sep 2026; how we pick.

Every small garden sauna, smallest first

The table opens sorted by footprint. Switch the sort to price if you prefer.

Prices include VAT. Each row shows the date we checked it against the retailer's own page; the latest check was 30 September 2026. Prices change: the retailer's checkout price is what counts. Height chips show the retailer's stated height: green 2.5 m or lower, amber taller. That's before your base, and it isn't a planning check (see why 2.5 m matters). “Not recorded” means we could not confirm the figure on the retailer's page.

How much space do you really need?

The footprint in the table is the outside of the sauna itself. Plan for more than that. Our sauna finder does the sum for you: enter the space you have and the gap you want round it, and it shows every model that fits, either way round.

• Room to get round it. You’ll want to reach every side to treat the timber and clean the gutters or roof. Leave a path’s width if you can.
• The door swing and a step. Sauna doors usually open outwards, so allow for the swing.
• The flue or vents. A wood-burning stove needs its flue clear of trees and overhangs.
• The way in. Most saunas arrive as a kit on a pallet at the kerb. Measure every gate and passage between the road and the garden.

A small sauna also needs a small base: slabs, a concrete pad or a gravel grid, level and a little bigger than the footprint. Installing a garden sauna covers the options.

Planning in a small garden

In a small garden, the sauna will usually be near a fence, which makes the height rule the one that matters. In England, if any part of an outbuilding is within 2 m of a boundary, the whole building must be no more than 2.5 m high to be permitted development; Wales has the same 2.5 m limit within 2 m, and in Scotland the zone is 1 m. Of the 77 small saunas with a stated height, all 77 are 2.5 m or lower as the retailer states it, before your base.

Two other rules catch small plots. Outbuildings and extensions together must not cover more than half the land around the original house. And nothing can go in front of the house’s principal elevation, usually the front wall. Run your spot through the planning permission checker to test all the limits at once.

The smallest saunas by footprint

The eight smallest with a stated seat count, footprint and height. A 1.2 m by 1.1 m sauna is about the size of a large wardrobe.

One, two and three-seat saunas

3 listings did not state a seat count.

Most small saunas seat two to four. A two-seater in this group is typically 1.49 m by 1.32 m.

2 person outdoor saunas

34 saunas in our data are listed for up to two people, from £2,000, with a median of £4,878 and a median footprint of 2.2 m². 18 include a heater. These are the cheapest:

The ten cheapest saunas listed for up to two people. A further 30 are listed for up to three.

Where a heater is included, its output runs from 2.5 kW to 6 kW, most often 4.5 kW. Check the listing for the supply it needs, and see the electrical supply calculator. Need more seats? See 4 person outdoor saunas and 6 person outdoor saunas.

Which type fits a small garden?

Here’s how the 86 small saunas split by type: 27 cabins, 26 barrels, 21 cubes, 9 infrareds, 3 pods. - Short barrels are among the cheapest small saunas in our data; two-seat barrels are about 1.5 m long. - Cubes and pods give more headroom in the same footprint. - Compact cabins make the best use of a square corner. - Outdoor infrared saunas are compact and usually the cheapest to run.

Heaters and power for a small sauna

A small room needs a small heater: most of the saunas here come with a 3.5 kW to 6 kW heater, where one is included. That means a lower electricity bill per session, but it usually still means a dedicated circuit, hardwired by an electrician. Several small models state supplies such as “230V / 20A; requires an electrician to hardwire”. Check the listing, and read the electrics section of installing a garden sauna.
