A sauna thermometer shows the air temperature where it hangs, a hygrometer shows the humidity, and a sand timer runs for a set time, fifteen minutes on most of the ones we list. We recorded 17 thermometers and hygrometers and 11 sand timers at four UK retailers, from £9.99 to £130, checked on 3 October 2026.

“From” is the cheapest listing not marked out of stock. The median is the middle price of all the listings of that type.
These are not the shops’ whole ranges: we recorded a sample from each retailer’s thermometer and timer categories.
Thermometer, hygrometer or both?
- Thermometer (9 listed, from £9.99). Air temperature only. Two of the listings state a scale of up to 120°C.
- Thermo-hygrometer (7 listed, from £12.99). Temperature and humidity in one gauge. HUUM describes its own as measuring temperature and humidity in the sauna.
- Hygrometer (one listed on its own). Humidity only.
Humidity is what water on the stones changes: Harvia’s manual for its Cilindro Pro heater says the sauna air becomes dry as it warms, and water is thrown on the heated stones to bring the humidity to a suitable level.
None of the listings we recorded describes its gauge as digital, and one is listed as liquid-filled. Most give little detail beyond the case material, and three of the listings were read from the category page only. Heater controllers, which have their own temperature sensor, are covered under heater controls.

Where to hang a sauna thermometer
No maker we’ve read gives a mounting height for a wall thermometer, so there isn’t a sourced rule to pass on. What the makers do say explains why the position matters:
- Tylö measures near the ceiling. Tylö’s US guide for its Sense Sport heater says its stated temperatures are measured 8 to 10 inches from the ceiling above the heater. A thermometer hung anywhere else is measuring a different spot.
- Heater sensors are placed high, and away from the door. HUUM’s US manual for its UKU controller puts the temperature sensor 15 cm (6 inches) from the ceiling. Harvia says the sensor should be away from the door, glass walls and windows, because the air there may be cooler.
So read a wall thermometer as the temperature where it hangs, not as a check on the heater’s setting. If you want to know the temperature where you sit, hang it there, where you can see it from the bench. Sauna sand timers
Eight of the 11 sand timers we list state a 15-minute run; for the other three we didn’t record a run time. HUUM sells a 15-minute timer of its own. They cost from £19.99 to £96.

Sizes and materials
For scale, HUUM’s thermo-hygrometer measures 177 x 177 x 35 mm, and SAWO lists a square thermometer at 110 x 85 mm and a thermo-hygrometer at 180 x 180 mm. Cases are pine, alder, birch, bamboo or anodised aluminium in the listings above, so they can be matched to the benches or to a bucket and ladle.

Do you need a thermometer in a sauna?
It's a separate gauge from the heater's own sensor. HUUM's US manual for its UKU controller puts the heater's temperature sensor 15 cm from the ceiling; a wall thermometer shows the temperature where it hangs.
