Measure the space, tell us the seats and budget, and see every sauna in our data that fits, with its height checked against the 2.5 m boundary rule.

Searches the 326 saunas in our data whose retailer states the external length and width, turning each one round if it fits better that way. Saunas with no stated height are left out when you set a height limit. Heights are the retailer's, before your base; this isn't a planning check. Prices change: check the retailer's page.

How to measure your space
Measure the space you could give the sauna, not the sauna you’d like: from fence to path, from the shed to the flower bed. Then:
- Enter the length and width of that space. The finder turns each sauna round if it fits better the other way.
- Leave a gap. The default leaves 0.3 m on every side, enough to reach round with a brush and a tin of preservative. Increase it if you want a path all the way round, or a spot to sit outside.
- Set the height limit. If any part of the sauna will be within 2 m of a boundary (1 m in Scotland), the permitted development limit is 2.5 m for the whole building, including its base. Further away, it’s 3 m or 4 m depending on the roof. Our planning permission checker runs the full rules.
- Allow for the base. The heights in our data are the sauna’s own. A raised base adds to it.
Only saunas whose retailer states the external length and width can be searched, and only those with a stated height pass a height limit. If a model you like is missing, check its drawings: our tables show it as “Not recorded”.
How much space does a garden sauna need?
These are the sizes in our data by the seat count the retailer gives. The footprint is the outside of the sauna.
| Seats | Models | From | Median price | Median footprint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 seat | 1 | £3,995 | £3,995 | 1.6 m² |
| 2 seats | 34 | £2,000 | £4,878 | 2.2 m² |
| 3 seats | 30 | £2,150 | £4,975 | 3.4 m² |
| 4 seats | 118 | £2,300 | £5,993 | 5.2 m² |
| 5 seats | 15 | £5,000 | £12,550 | 10.1 m² |
| 6 seats | 120 | £2,500 | £7,950 | 5.9 m² |
| 7 seats | 1 | £5,721 | £5,721 | 8.9 m² |
| 8 seats | 20 | £5,781 | £9,091 | 6.8 m² |
| 10 seats | 1 | £29,299 | £29,299 | — |
125 listings did not state a seat count.
The middle half of two-seat saunas take up 1.7 m² to 2.5 m²; four-seaters 4.0 m² to 7.1 m²; six-seaters 5.1 m² to 7.5 m², more with a porch or changing room. Seat counts are generous: “six-seat” usually means six people sitting close together on two benches.
Which shape fits a small space?
- Barrels are usually 1.8 m to 2.3 m across whatever their length, so they need a strip at least that wide. Every barrel in our data with a stated height is 2.5 m or lower.
- Cubes and pods give more headroom in the same footprint, and all those we could measure are 2.5 m or lower too.
- Cabins make the best use of a square corner but are often taller: 41 of the 101 with a stated height are over 2.5 m.
- Outdoor infrared saunas are among the most compact for two people.
All 86 saunas that fit in 4 m² or less are on small garden saunas.
Getting it into the garden
A sauna that fits the plot still has to get there. Most arrive as a kit on a pallet at the kerb, sometimes weighing several hundred kilograms in all, and the parts go through the garden by hand. Measure gates, side passages and doorways before you order, and check each retailer’s delivery terms on retailers compared.
Then add up the cost
When you’ve found one you like, put its price into the garden sauna cost calculator to add the heater, assembly, electrics and base, and check what it will cost to run with the running cost calculator.
