Harvia sauna heaters: every model compared

Harvia is a Finnish sauna heater maker and the name you’ll see most often on UK sauna listings. We found 45 Harvia heater listings from 4 UK retailers (Aqualine Saunas, Leisurequip, Palmako, Steam & Oak), from compact 4.5 kW electric heaters to wood-burning stoves for large rooms, plus 60 garden saunas sold with a Harvia heater fitted. Harvia ranges explained

What the listings tell you about each range:

• The Wall is a flat, wall-mounted electric heater. It’s listed from 4.5 kW to 9 kW, some versions with built-in controls and some (the “E” models) needing a separate controller.
• Cilindro is a tall cylindrical heater that holds a large column of stones. Electric versions are listed at 6.8 kW and 9 kW, and there’s a wood-burning Cilindro 16 too. It’s the Harvia most often named in garden saunas sold with a heater.
• KIP and Vega are compact, lower-cost electric heaters, listed from 4.5 kW to 9 kW. They’re the cheapest heaters in our data.
• Virta is listed as a heavy-duty electric heater, from 7 kW to 11 kW, with a separate controller.
• Spirit (Spirit of Löyly) is listed at 6 kW and 9 kW.
• M3, Pro, Legend and Linear are wood-burning stoves, for rooms from about 6 m³ up to 36 m³ according to the retailers’ figures. See wood-burning sauna stoves to compare them, and the smoke control rules.

Harvia Cilindro

The Cilindro is Harvia’s tall, cylindrical heater with a large column of stones. We list 6 electric Cilindro listings, at 6.8 kW and 9 kW, from £495 to £1,465. Part of the price gap is the controls: the “E” versions are listed as needing a separate controller, the PC90 has its controls on the heater, and the PC90XE is listed with a Xenio control unit or a Wi-Fi system.

There’s also a wood-burning Cilindro 16, listed under wood-burning stoves below. Among garden saunas sold with a heater, the Cilindro is the Harvia named most often: 32 saunas in our data list one.

Harvia Vega

The Vega is a compact, lower-cost electric heater. We list 5 Vega listings from 4.5 kW to 9 kW, from £355 to £520. Model codes start with BC, and the BC45E, BC60E, BC80E and BC90E are listed as needing a separate controller.

Harvia M3 and Pro 20 wood-burning stoves

The M3 is Harvia’s small wood-burning stove, and several retailers in our data offer it as the wood-fired option on their saunas, including Steam & Oak, Summerhouse24 and Polar Recovery. We list 2 M3 listings: the standard M3 at £755, which Aqualine Saunas lists for rooms of 6 to 13 m³, and the M3 SL, which Steam & Oak describes as the through-wall version. The Pro 20 is the next size up, listed for rooms of 8 to 20 m³.

A wood-burning stove needs a flue and clearances to the maker’s manual. In England, wood can only be burned in a smoke control area in an exempt appliance, and the other UK nations have their own rules. What Harvia’s manual says about using the heater

From Harvia’s Cilindro Pro manual and its support pages (check the manual for your own model):

• Temperature. About 65 to 75°C is a suitable sauna temperature, and a properly insulated room with the right size of heater takes about an hour to reach it. More in sauna temperature.
• Water. Use a ladle of no more than 0.2 litres, and clean household water.
• Stones. Restack them from time to time; in a sauna used about twice a week, change them once a year.
• Timers. Heaters with a mechanical timer run for up to four hours; with a Xenio control panel the default on-time is six hours.

Controls: E models need a separate controller

In the listings we checked, Harvia electric heaters with an E in the model code (such as KIP60E, BC60E, SW60E and PC90E) are listed as needing a separate control unit, usually wall-mounted outside the hot room. Models without the E (such as SW80 and PC90) have controls on the heater. The E versions often look cheaper, so add the controller before you compare.

Which size Harvia do you need?

Harvia states a room size range for each output. From the retailer listings:
