33 ready-made sauna scents and 58 essential oils, with the price and bottle size each listing gives, the dose where it gives one, and what the heater makers say about using them.
The short answer
- Two kinds of product. Ready-made sauna scents are sold for saunas and steam rooms, most with a dose on the listing. Pure essential oils are a different product: none of the product pages we read at Tisserand, Neal’s Yard Remedies or Nikura mentions sauna use.
- In the water, not on the stones. HUUM’s DROP heater manual says to use sauna fragrances and oils only in the steam water, and that poured undiluted onto the stones they can catch fire. Tylö’s US manual for its Sense Sport heater warns that fragrant essences may ignite if poured directly onto the stones.
- Check your heater’s manual. Harvia’s manual for its Cilindro Pro heater says only aromas designed for sauna water may be used.
- What it costs. At the dose each listing gives, a litre of scented sauna water works out at 28p to £1.50 for the scents whose listing states the dose in millilitres. The lowest figure is a Harvia bottle at Aqualine Saunas, which doesn’t say whether its prices include VAT.
A sauna scent goes into the bucket, and the steam carries it round the room when the water hits the stones. That is how the listings describe it, and HUUM’s and Tylö’s heater manuals put scent in water too. We recorded 33 ready-made sauna scents, four sets and five aroma holders at four sauna retailers, and 58 essential oils at three UK aromatherapy brands. Each is listed with the price and bottle size its seller gives, and the directions where it gives them, checked on 3 October 2026.

Sauna scents compared
Everything we recorded at the sauna retailers: scents, sets and aroma holders. Sort by “Price per 10 ml” to compare bottles of different sizes, but read it alongside the dilution, because the doses differ a great deal.

These are not the shops’ whole ranges. Finnmark’s sauna oils and scents collection had about 74 listings and Aqualine’s had 23; we recorded a sample of each, one or two sizes of a scent, and left out candles, soap and trade sizes. Leisurequip’s four Tylö essences share one listing with one starting price.
How much to use: what each listing says
The dose differs a great deal from one range to the next, so follow the bottle you have. These are the directions as each retailer lists them:

Directions are quoted from the retailer's listing for one scent in each range, as we read it on 3 October 2026. They are the retailer's wording, not the maker's label, and the label on the bottle is what counts. The last column is our arithmetic, only where the listing gives the dose in millilitres: the bottle price divided by its size, times the dose for one litre of water, across the scents we recorded in that range. Aqualine Saunas doesn't say whether its prices include VAT.

What sauna scents cost per litre of water
A bottle price says little until you know the dose. Where a listing gives the dose in millilitres, we’ve worked out what a litre of scented water costs:

For the rest, the listings give drops or capfuls, which we can’t turn into a cost. Aqualine’s listing for the Harvia 1,000 ml bottle says it provides approximately 100 to 200 sessions.
What sauna scents are made from
The listings say different things, and some say nothing:
- Emendo. Finnmark’s listing for the 500 ml eucalyptus scent says it is “made with 100% pure eucalyptus essential oil and contains no synthetic fragrances”.
- Osmia. Finnmark’s listing says the 50 ml concentrates are made in Finland from genuine oils.
- Harvia. Aqualine’s listing says “the Harvia sauna fragrances contain essential oils”.
- Tylö. Leisurequip describes the essences as “highly concentrated” and “blended from a range of natural oils”.
- Narvi and Luhta. The listings we read don’t say what the scent is made from.
None of the sauna scent pages we read carried a fire warning, but we read the retailers’ listings, not the labels. Some carry handling warnings: Finnmark’s listings for Osmia and Narvi scents say never to use the concentrate undiluted, and Aqualine’s page for Harvia’s Lemon Grass scent says to use it only as directed in the product instructions and not to apply it directly to sauna surfaces or skin. Read the label on the bottle, and see the makers’ warnings.

Essential oils
Essential oils come in small bottles: 9 or 10 ml at the three brands we compare, with larger sizes at Tisserand and Nikura. We recorded 58 single oils, from £4.25 a bottle. The full comparison, with botanical names, origins and how each brand describes the scent, is on essential oils for a sauna.
Two things to know before you buy one for the sauna. Where the brands’ product pages give directions, they are for diffusers, baths and massage, not for sauna water. And several of the listings carry a flammable warning: of the 21 Tisserand listings, 12 had one in the text we read.

Aroma bowls and holders
An aroma holder is a bowl, ball or stone cup that holds the scent, usually in water, on or beside the heater.

The listings describe them as used with water: Finnmark’s for the aroma ball says to fill it with water and a few drops of sauna essence, and Leisurequip’s for the Tylö Jewel bowl says water goes in first, and never to add oils directly into an empty bowl. Tylö’s US manual for the Sense Sport heater says to pour a few drops of Tylö Sauna Fragrance into the water in the holder, and not to pour water into the holder once it has heated up, because boiling water can splash onto the people in the sauna.

Finnmark Sauna and Steam & Oak also sell saunas, so their terms are on UK sauna retailers compared. Delivery and returns for Tisserand, Neal’s Yard Remedies and Nikura are on essential oils for a sauna.
What these lists leave out
- Not every product. We recorded a sample of each range, and one or two sizes of a scent. We left out essential oil blends, a pack of menthol crystals and one scent set, because their names or listings are health or benefit claims, and one sold-out oil that showed two prices.
- Stock. Three items were out of stock when we checked and are marked. For 20 more the listing didn’t show stock, or showed it unclearly: that covers most of Neal’s Yard Remedies and several Harvia scents at Aqualine. Two Harvia scents at Aqualine are listed as pre-order.
- VAT. Aqualine Saunas and Leisurequip don’t say whether their prices include VAT, and we saw no VAT wording on the three aromatherapy brands’ pages. For Finnmark Sauna and Steam & Oak we recorded the displayed price and didn’t check.
- Wording. We read every page through a tool that summarises it, so a quotation here may differ slightly from the live page. 21 items were read from a range page only.
What we say about scent, and what we don’t
This site makes no health claims, and that holds here. We do quote how a seller describes a scent, in quotation marks and with the seller named, because the smell is the product. We don’t repeat anything a seller says about health, and we left out products whose name or listing is a health promise.
The UK advertising code draws a similar line. CAP’s advice on aromatherapy says medicinal claims for aromatherapy products are not permitted unless the product is a licensed medicine, and that objective health claims must be backed by robust evidence. It says claims that the aromas from the oils promote a sense of relaxation or wellbeing are likely to be acceptable. So words like “relaxing” or “uplifting” appear on these pages only as the seller’s wording, never as ours.

Sauna scent questions
What scents can you use in a sauna?
Scents sold for sauna water, used as the bottle directs. We list 33 ready-made sauna scents, mostly eucalyptus, birch, tar, pine, citrus and mint. Harvia's manual for its Cilindro Pro heater says only aromas designed for sauna water may be used, so check your own heater's manual.
How do you use sauna scent?
Mixed into the water, not poured on the stones. HUUM's DROP heater manual says to use sauna fragrances and oils only in the steam water. The dose depends on the range: the listings we read give anything from a few drops in a ladle to 50 ml in about three litres.
Can you put essential oils on sauna stones?
No. HUUM's DROP heater manual says to use sauna fragrances and oils only in the steam water, and that they can catch fire if poured undiluted directly onto the stones, and Tylö's US Sense Sport manual warns that fragrant essences may ignite if poured directly onto the stones.
How much does sauna scent cost?
The 33 ready-made sauna scents we recorded cost from £6.99 to £55 a bottle on 3 October 2026; the dearest prices are at Aqualine Saunas, which doesn't state VAT. Where the listing gives a dose in millilitres, a litre of scented water works out at 28p to £1.50.
What is the difference between sauna scent and essential oil?
A sauna scent is sold for sauna water, and most of the listings we read give a dose. An essential oil is the undiluted oil, sold in small bottles: 9 or 10 ml at the three brands we compare, with some larger sizes. Some sauna scents are made with essential oils: Finnmark's listing for Emendo's 500 ml eucalyptus scent says it is made with 100% pure eucalyptus essential oil.
Does this site say sauna scents are good for you?
No. We compare prices, sizes and directions, and quote how sellers describe a scent. We make no health claims and don't repeat sellers' health claims.
