58 essential oils from three UK aromatherapy brands, compared on price per 10 ml, with what the brands and the heater makers say about using them.
The short answer
- Price. A 9 or 10 ml bottle costs from £4.25 to £26 across the 58 single oils we recorded. The cheapest Tisserand bottles were at half price when we checked. Nikura’s are the cheapest for most oils, Neal’s Yard Remedies’ are mostly organic, and Tisserand’s usually sit between the two on price.
- Not sold as sauna products. None of the product pages we read at the three brands mentions sauna use. Where they give directions, they are for diffusers, baths and massage.
- In water only, if at all. HUUM’s DROP heater manual says to use sauna fragrances and oils only in the steam water, and that undiluted on the stones they can catch fire. Harvia’s Cilindro Pro manual says only aromas designed for sauna water may be used.
- The simpler route. Most ready-made sauna scents come with a dose for sauna water, and several are made with essential oils.

The lowest-priced small bottle of each oil that we recorded at each brand on 3 October 2026, leaving out listings marked out of stock; where a brand sells more than one version (organic, another species or origin), this is the cheapest. Tisserand's bottles are 9 ml and the others 10 ml, so the second line gives the price per 10 ml. “Not found” means we didn't find that oil in the pages we read, not that the brand doesn't sell it. Stock at Neal's Yard Remedies wasn't clear when we read it, and Nikura's eucalyptus listing didn't show stock. We saw no VAT wording on the three brands' pages. These are not the brands’ whole ranges. We recorded single oils in a set list of scents: Tisserand’s essential oil collection listed 151 products, Neal’s Yard Remedies’ 50 and Nikura’s 92. We left out blends, most of which are named for a benefit such as sleep or energy. 25 of the 58 listings are described as organic.
Bigger bottles
Where a brand sells a larger size that was in stock, the price per 10 ml falls sharply: Nikura’s 100 ml bottles work out at around £1 to £1.70 per 10 ml.

The three brands
- Tisserand. Tisserand says its story started in 1974, when Robert Tisserand launched a range of pure essential oils, and that its oils are blended and bottled in West Sussex. We recorded 21 single oils, all in 9 ml bottles, from £4.25 to £19; some are also sold in 20 ml. Most of its product pages give drop-by-drop directions for diffusers, baths and massage, and label warnings.
- Neal’s Yard Remedies. Neal’s Yard Remedies says it started in Covent Garden in 1981 and makes its products at a factory in Dorset. We recorded 16 single oils, all 10 ml, from £10 to £26; 14 are organic. Its product pages carried no warnings and almost no directions in the text we read, and stock wasn’t clear.
- Nikura. Nikura describes itself as a UK-run, family-owned business since 2016 and says its oils are bottled in the UK. We recorded 21 single oils at £4.99 or £5.99 for 10 ml, each also sold in 50 ml and 100 ml bottles and by weight. It publishes safety data sheets for its oils.

Using essential oils in a sauna
None of the three brands’ product pages that we read mentions a sauna, and nothing we found on their sites gives a dose for sauna water. The directions Tisserand and Nikura give are for diffusers, baths and massage, so we don’t repeat them here.
What we do have is what the heater makers say:
- HUUM. The DROP heater manual says to use sauna fragrances and oils only in the steam water, and that poured undiluted onto the stones they can catch fire.
- Tylö. The US manual for the Sense Sport heater says to pour a few drops of Tylö Sauna Fragrance into the water in the fragrance holder, and warns that fragrant essences may ignite if poured directly onto the stones.
- Harvia. The Cilindro Pro manual says only special aromas designed for sauna water may be used.
On Harvia’s wording that means a product made for sauna water. HUUM’s and Tylö’s manuals both put scent in water and warn against pouring it onto the stones. Fire and label warnings
Several labels and data sheets carry fire warnings:
- Tisserand. 12 of the 21 Tisserand listings we read carried a flammable or keep-away-from-heat warning, among them both eucalyptus oils, lemon, orange and tea tree. Tisserand’s page on hazard symbols lists “Keep away from naked flames” among its warning statements, and says its oils remain safe to use provided they are used as instructed on the carton and website.
- Nikura. Nikura’s safety data sheet for its Eucalyptus (Chinese) oil, the one in our table, gives a flash point of 45.5 °C, classes it as “Flammable liquid and vapour” and says to keep it away from heat, sparks, open flames and hot surfaces. Its sheet for steam-distilled lemon oil gives 53.5 °C and the same warnings.
- The Tisserand Institute. Its safety guidelines say essential oils are flammable and should not be used in any way that involves close proximity to a naked flame.
For comparison, Harvia’s Cilindro Pro manual gives a suitable sauna room temperature of about 65 to 75 °C and Narvi’s Velvet manual recommends 60 to 80 °C, both above those flash points.
The labels carry other warnings too. Tisserand’s include “Do not use undiluted on the skin”, “Keep out of reach of children” and avoiding contact with the eyes, and its FAQ says to keep bottles tightly closed in a cool, dark place. Read the label on the bottle you buy.

How the brands describe each scent, in their own words, with the number of listings and the cheapest bottle not marked out of stock:
- Eucalyptus (6 listed, from £4.99). Nikura, Eucalyptus (Chinese) Essential Oil: “fresh, invigorating aroma”. Tisserand, Eucalyptus Ethically Harvested Essential Oil: “light and fresh”.
- Mint and menthol (6 listed, from £4.25). Tisserand, English Peppermint Essential Oil: “Rich, bracing scent with a sweet minty aroma”. Nikura, Peppermint (Arvensis) Essential Oil: “its refreshing, stimulating character and its crisp, revitalising aroma”.
- Pine, fir and spruce (5 listed, from £4.99). Nikura, Black Spruce Essential Oil: “fresh forest scent with sweet, woody notes”. Tisserand, Siberian Fir Essential Oil: “fresh, green, pine-like aroma with a clear, penetrating edge”.

Three scents have their own pages, which set the oils beside the ready-made sauna scents: eucalyptus, birch, tar and pine and peppermint and menthol.
What we didn’t find
- Birch oil. None of the three brands had a birch essential oil in the pages we read. For a birch scent, see the ready-made birch sauna scents.
- Pine at Tisserand. We found Siberian fir at Tisserand, but not pine, spruce or spearmint.
- Conifers at Neal’s Yard Remedies. It sells pine, but we didn’t find fir, spruce, cypress, juniper or spearmint as single oils.
- Menthol crystals at Nikura. We didn’t find them in the pages we read.
We read a sample of each site, so “not found” means not found in what we read.
Essential oil questions
Can you use essential oils in a sauna?
The heater manuals we've read that mention scent put it in the water. HUUM's DROP heater manual says to use sauna fragrances and oils only in the steam water, and that undiluted on the stones they can catch fire. Harvia's Cilindro Pro manual says only aromas designed for sauna water may be used. Check your own heater's manual first.
Which essential oils are used for sauna scent?
The ready-made sauna scents we list are mostly eucalyptus, birch, tar, pine, citrus and mint. Tylö's US Sense Sport manual lists six Tylö sauna fragrances: eucalyptus, mint, menthol, pine, lemon and birch.
How much do essential oils cost?
The 58 single essential oils we recorded cost from £4.25 to £26 for a 9 or 10 ml bottle on 3 October 2026. Nikura's 10 ml bottles are £4.99 or £5.99.
Are essential oils flammable?
Some labels and data sheets say so. Nikura's safety data sheet for its Eucalyptus (Chinese) oil gives a flash point of 45.5 °C and classes it as a flammable liquid and vapour, and 12 of the 21 Tisserand listings we read carried a flammable or keep-away-from-heat warning.
Do Tisserand, Neal's Yard or Nikura sell sauna oils?
Not as such. None of the product pages we read at the three brands mentions sauna use; where they give directions, they are for diffusers, baths and massage. Ready-made sauna scents with sauna directions are compared on our sauna scents page.
